Oil spill is the accidental or intentional spillage of liquid petroleum into water bodies, thus affecting the aquatic ecosystem. Fisheries and aquaculture being one of the major sectors of food industries are largely affected by the pollution caused by oil spills. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons released due to these oil spills pollutes the seafood consumed by us. The impact of an oil spill on the seafood industry depends on the intensity and the characteristics of the oil. It can further cause toxic algal blooms which can be poisonous for the fishes and also for the humans consuming them.
